Caramel M&Ms? A BLUE bag? What did I just see??

Caramel M&MsA few days ago, I happened to be wandering the aisles of my neighborhood drugstore when I spotted something strange and unfamiliar: M&Ms candies in a dark blue package. I instantly did a double-take. It was then that I noticed the yellow banner on the bag proclaiming it “NEW!” flavor, and a 2-for-1 sale sign nearby. Upon closer inspection, I realized that I was in the presence of…caramel M&Ms!

After a bit of research, I learned that this flavor is a brand new edition to the M&Ms family, with the candies making their debut in May 2017. So, being a fan of both M&Ms AND caramel, I snatched up one of the blue bags and set my sights on creating a new M&M cookie.

A twist on the classic M&M cookie, this recipe combines a dark chocolate base with caramel M&Ms and chunks of caramel candy. (I used the classic Kraft caramels, although any brand would do.) They’re particularly good when warm and just slightly gooey.

My only complaint is that these M&Ms are fairly large (bigger than a peanut M&M) so these cookies are definitely on the “chunky” side. If I made this recipe again, I’d probably chop the M&Ms into smaller pieces before adding them to the dough.

Caramel M&M Inspiration

If you’re not a fan of chocolate cookies (I made these using a combination of regular and special dark cocoa powders) you could also make caramel M&M cookies using a traditional chocolate chip cookie dough. However, I thought the chocolate dough worked nicely with the caramel.

Also, these M&Ms would be amazing in trail mix! They’re pretty sweet on their own, but would be great in a salty-sweet mix with nuts and pretzels. I might need to try concocting a caramel trail mix sometime soon.

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Unwrap caramels and cut each candy into 4 smaller pieces. Set aside.

  3. Add flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt to a large mixing bowl. Whisk to combine.

  4. In a separate mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to combine butter, sugar, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla.

  5. Gradually add flour/cocoa mixture to butter mixture, and continue mixing until well combined.

  6. Add M&Ms and caramel pieces to cookie dough, using your hands to knead the candies into the mixture.

  7. Roll dough into 1 1-2" round balls. Place about 3" apart on lightly greased cookie sheets. Flatten the balls slightly. If desired, push a few extra caramels or M&Ms onto the tops of the cookies for visual appeal.
  8. Bake in preheated oven for 9 minutes. Do not overbake. Remove from oven and allow cookies to cool slightly on the tray, about 5 minutes, before transferring to a wire rack.

Recipe Notes

Although cookie recipes which contain butter often call for uncreased cookie sheets, I found lightly greasing helped to prevent the caramel in the cookies from sticking to the pan.
